How to Choose the Right Subjects for Next Year

Choosing elective subjects in Years 9 and 10 can be difficult. Selecting the right subjects to study in Years 11 and 12 is even more daunting as these choices have a direct impact on your future.

If you’re not sure what you want to do, it’s vital to make smart choices that help you decide what fields you’re interested in. Unfortunately, many kids don’t put enough thought into their choices, or simply select subjects to be with their friends.

These tips on how to choose the right subjects will help give you a great head start.

Write Down Your Goals

Most students only have a vague idea of what they want to do after school, and this is fine. You don’t have to have your career mapped out already. When selecting subjects start big by writing down a list of careers that inspire you. Select subjects that will let you test out your aptitude and demonstrate your interest in your chosen area.

Research University Courses

If you intend to go to university, research the degrees available in your chosen fields. Many degrees have prerequisites that you may have to make up through bridging courses if you don’t meet the criteria. University websites and admission guides will give you a solid idea of what you’ll need to gain entry to a particular degree.

Review Your Academic Record

Your academic record provides good clues about the subjects you have a natural affinity for. Take a good look at your past reports and think about the subjects you’ve done well in and why. While you don’t necessarily have to follow a career path just because you’re good in a particular area, you’re more likely to be successful and fulfilled if your career matches your abilities.

Consider What Makes You Happy

It’s also important to think about what you enjoy. Don’t just choose subjects because you think you should or because they will look good on your academic transcript. If you love a subject, you’re much more likely to be engaged and excel in it. It’s also okay to choose a subject just for enjoyment or knowledge even if you don’t intend to make a career of it. Just make sure your other choices support your future goals.

Find a Good Balance

If you’re interested in pursuing a career in medicine, it’s tempting to choose a lot of science subjects. If the creative industries are more your style, you might want to choose all arts-based subjects. There are many benefits to creating a more balanced program by selecting from a range of learning areas. This will allow you to keep your options open and discover what you really want to do. Having a balanced education is a bonus in any career and can help you stand out from the crowd in job interviews.

Ask Others for Advice

Other people are a valuable source of guidance when it comes to choosing subjects. Speak to your teachers and school careers counsellor about what they recommend. An experienced tutor can help you make good selections. Your parents can also help guide you in the right direction. Students who have recently finished school will be able to give you advice based on their experiences.

Follow these tips to choose the right subjects for you.
