Frequently Asked Questions About Becoming a Tutor

If you’re interested in becoming a tutor, we’d love to hear from you. Simply fill out our Become a Tutor form, and your local Tutor Doctor team will get in touch to walk you through the next steps.

To be a tutor, you should have:

  • Strong subject knowledge
  • Completed or ongoing tertiary education
  • Great communication skills
  • Patience and empathy
  • A genuine interest in helping others
  • A reliable, flexible attitude

We welcome tutors from all backgrounds who are passionate about supporting students.

When you join Tutor Doctor, you’re not just signing up for a job — you’re joining a team that’s here to support you and set you up for success. We handle the background work so you can focus on what you love: working with students.

Your local team will meet with families to understand each student’s unique learning goals, then carefully match you based on your strengths, subject knowledge, and availability. You’ll have the flexibility to choose when you tutor, along with the reliability of consistent work and regular pay.

We’ll also give you access to valuable resources, like our online tutor tools and learning guides, plus personalised support whenever you need it.

As part of our wider Tutor Doctor community, you’ll have the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of students — both locally and beyond.

Tutoring builds practical, transferable skills that are valuable in many careers, including:

  • Communication and active listening
  • Time management and organisation
  • Critical thinking and adaptability
  • Leadership and mentoring

It’s a great role whether you’re looking to grow professionally or personally.

Tutoring can be a great stepping stone if you’re considering a future in education. It gives you a chance to support students one-on-one, develop your communication skills, and see the impact of personalised learning in action.

Through tutoring, you’ll gain insight into how different students learn and respond to support — which is an essential part of being an effective educator. You’ll also learn how to plan sessions, give feedback, and adapt your approach based on a student’s needs.

Keep in mind that tutoring is quite different from classroom teaching. You’ll usually be working with individual students or small groups for a few hours per week, rather than managing a full class. But it’s a fantastic way to find out if you enjoy teaching and want to pursue it further.

Not at all. Many of our tutors started without formal experience. If you have the knowledge, are eager to help, and enjoy working with young people, we’ll give you the training and guidance to feel confident.

No. If you have the right mindset and subject knowledge, we’ll support you with training, match you with students, and handle the admin side of things so you can focus on teaching.

Getting started is simple! Fill out the Become a Tutor form or get in touch with your local office. We’ll get to know your strengths and availability, then match you with students who are the right fit. From there, you can jump into tutoring with full support.

Great tutors are more than just subject experts — they’re great listeners, encouragers, and problem-solvers. They know how to build trust, explain things clearly, and adapt to a student’s pace and learning style. Being patient, prepared, and consistent is key.
