Smart Ways Students Can Use AI for Revision and Study

A young student interacts with an AI chatbot on a smartphone while studying. TITLE:

AI can be a useful study tool, but relying on it too heavily can undermine learning. When students allow AI to do the thinking for them, they may miss opportunities to develop their own understanding and critical thinking skills. There are also concerns around originality and whether the information provided can be trusted.

Used thoughtfully, however, AI can support students in taking greater control of their learning. It can help them engage with difficult material and make studying more manageable. For parents, the key is helping students understand how to use AI as a support while keeping genuine learning at the centre.

These strategies can help students make productive use of AI while remaining actively involved in their own learning.

  • Summarise Class Notes

AI can turn a set of class notes into a shorter summary that is easier to revise. This can be particularly useful when notes are lengthy or contain information that is difficult to organise. Students should still read through the original notes and check that the summary has captured the important information. This also gives them a chance to notice anything they may have misunderstood or need to revisit. The summary should support their revision rather than replace learning the material themselves.

  • Turn Notes Into a Revision Quiz

Class notes can be turned into a revision quiz, giving students a chance to test what they actually remember. They can answer the questions without looking at their notes and then check their responses afterwards. Getting an answer wrong can show them where they need to spend more time revising. Parents can encourage their child to use their own notes as the source material, so the questions relate directly to what has been covered at school.

  • Create Practice Questions From a Textbook

Another way students can use AI for study is by providing it with a section of their textbook and asking it to create practice questions based on the material. They can then attempt the questions without referring back to the textbook before checking their answers. This can make revision more active and reveal areas where their understanding needs more work. This is particularly useful when preparing for exams.

  • Explain Why an Answer Was Wrong

When a student gets a question wrong, it’s tempting to just ask AI for the correct answer, but this is not necessarily enough. A more useful approach is to provide the original question and their answer, and ask AI to explain where their reasoning went wrong. They can then attempt the question again themselves. This can help them recognise mistakes in their thinking and understand the underlying concept, although they should check the explanation against their notes, textbook, or teacher if anything seems unclear or inconsistent.

  • Break Down a Large Assignment

A large assignment can be difficult to approach when a student is unsure where to start. AI can help break the task into smaller stages, making it easier to see what needs to be done. Students can use the assignment instructions to work out what each stage involves and then create their own plan. The actual research, thinking, and writing should remain their responsibility. This allows AI to provide organisational support without doing the important work.

How Tutor Doctor Helps Students Navigate AI for Study

At Tutor Doctor, we help students understand how to use AI as part of their study routine without allowing it to take over their learning. Our tutors guide students in asking useful questions, checking the information AI provides, and thinking carefully about the answers they receive.

We also help students understand when AI can support their work and when they need to rely on their own knowledge and judgement. This gives parents confidence that their child is learning how to use AI responsibly and developing crucial skills.
