Automated Thinking: The Power of Routine for the ADHD Brain

It’s estimated that around 7.2% of children and adolescents (ages 4-17) have been diagnosed with ADHD in Australia. This amounts to approximately 300,000 to 350,000 students across the country.

ADHD is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders among Australian students and can significantly affect their academic and social life, often requiring tailored support in educational settings.

Fortunately, there are many strategies parents and educators can use to support students. Establishing consistent routines is one of the most effective ways to help kids with ADHD.

How is ADHD Diagnosed?

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects a person’s ability to focus, control impulses, and manage energy levels. It commonly manifests in three main types: inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive, and a combination of both.

People with ADHD may struggle with tasks requiring sustained attention, experience restlessness, or act impulsively. Symptoms often appear in childhood and can continue into adulthood, affecting daily functioning at home, school, or work.

While the exact cause isn’t known, genetics and brain structure are believed to play a role. Treatments typically include therapy, behavioural interventions, and medication.

Why Routine is Important for Students with ADHD

Routine is very important for students with ADHD as it provides structure and offers clear expectations. This helps students manage their time and activities more effectively. Having structure also reduces overwhelm, because the number of decisions a student needs to make are reduced.

Repeated, consistent patterns make it easier for students to stay on task because they enhance focus. They help smooth transitions between activities, which can be challenging for students with ADHD. In addition, they support recall, by helping students with tasks and deadlines. This enables student to complete homework and organise learning materials.

Predictability in daily activities can also reduce anxiety and emotional outbursts, providing a sense of control. With routines in place, students can develop self-management skills and rely less on external guidance, boosting their confidence and independence.

Tips for Establishing Consistent Routines

Here are some ways parents can help establish and maintain routines for students with ADHD:

  • Create a Clear Daily Schedule: Post a visual schedule in a common area, outlining daily routines like waking up, meals, study time, and bedtime.
  • Use Visual Aids: Use charts, timers, or color-coded calendars to help your child see and understand their routine.
  • Set Consistent Times: Keep regular times for meals, homework, and sleep, as consistency helps students with ADHD feel more secure.
  • Break Tasks into Steps: Help your child by breaking tasks into smaller, manageable steps, and scheduling breaks in between.
  • Offer Positive Reinforcement: Use rewards, praise, or incentives to encourage your child to stick to their routine.
  • Prepare for Transitions: Give your child warnings (e.g., 5-10 minutes) before transitioning from one activity to another to help them mentally prepare.
  • Limit Distractions: Create a distraction-free zone for studying and homework, ensuring they can focus on their routine tasks.
  • Be Flexible Yet Consistent: While maintaining routine is important, allow for some flexibility when unexpected changes occur to avoid frustration.
  • Involve Your Child: Include your child in planning their routine so they feel a sense of ownership and responsibility.
  • Model Routines Yourself: Set an example by following consistent routines in your own life, showing your child the benefits of structure.
